James E. Reece (1820-1901) & Nancy Ann Anthony (1823-after 1910)

James E. Reece & Nancy Ann Anthony are Todd’s 3X Great Grandparents. Todd’s mother’s DNA puts her into the DNA Circle for both James and Nancy.

James E. Reece was born in Pennsylvania. He is thought to be the son of Johannes “Joe” Reece, born in Germany in 1787. On the 1880 US Census, James reported that his father was born in Germany and his mother was born in Maryland. On the 1900 US Census, James reported that both his parents were born in Germany. James has two known brothers, Joseph and John.

Nancy Ann Anthony was born in Ohio. She is the daughter of Jacob Anthony (born in New Jersey) and Mary Ellen Davis (born in Ireland.) Read about her parents and siblings in this blog post.

James and Nancy were married by Reverend Jacob Delay on August 17, 1843 in Jackson County, Ohio.

On the 1850 US Census, James & Nancy lived in Washington, Jackson County, Ohio. Nancy’s parents lived next door. James was 29 and Nancy was 26. Daughter Mary Jane was 5 and son Darius was 4. James’ brother Joseph Reece, age 21 and a laborer, lived with them.

The family next appears on the 1856 Iowa Census. They had lived in the state for 5 years. Enumerated in Dahlonega Township, Wapello County, James was age 35; Nancy was age 32. Also in the home were Mary Jane, age 12; Darias, age 10; William, age 5; John G., age 1; and James’ brother John Reece, age 33 (a potter who has been in state for 9 years.) They lived on 80 unimproved acres with these assets: 8 acres of spring wheat with 129 bushels harvested; 7 acres of oats with 325 bushels harvested; 25 acres of corn with 1200 bushels harvested; 1/2 acre of potatoes with 30 bushels harvested; 21 hogs sold for $44; 4 cows sold for $54; 75 pounds of butter manufactured; 31 pounds of wool manufactured; $16 value of domestic manufacture.

On the 1860 US Census, the family lived in Clinton, Wayne County, Iowa. James was 38 and Nancy was 37. They had 6 children: Mary Jane was 16; Darius was 14; William was 9; John was 5; Cyrus was 3; Thomas was 1. Also in the home was 22 year old Elizabeth Long.

On the 1870 US Census, the family lived in Chester, Logan County, Illinois. James was 49 and Nancy was 47. They had 7 children at home: William, age 19; John, age 15; Cyrus, age 13; Thomas, age 11; Rufus, age 8; Matilda, age 6; Levi, age 3. Son Darius lived next door with his wife.

On the 1880 US Census, the family lived in Aetna, Logan County, Illinois. James was 59 and Nancy was 57. They had 3 children at home: Cyrus was 23; Matilda was 16; and Levi was 15.

On the 1900 US Census, the family lived in Orvil, Logan County, Illinois. James was 79 and Nancy was 77. Son Elmer, a widower, lived with them, along with his children Minnie, age 8; and Etta, age 6. Daughter Matilda, age 38, also lived at home. It is noted that James can read but can’t write.

James died December 9, 1901. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1905 Kansas Census, Nancy was 82 and living in Shawnee County, Kansas with Hannah Reece, age 41, widow of Nancy’s son John; and Hannah’s sons Harry Reece, age 20; Jesse Reece, age 14; Glenn Reece, age 6. It’s indicated that Nancy was blind.

On the 1910 US Census, Nancy was 87 and living in South Haven, Sumner County, Kansas. She lived with son Darius, age 64, and his wife Clarinda, age 64.

It is not known when and where Nancy died.

Check out Part 1, Part 2, and Part 4 of the album. Here’s part 3:

The first 4 photos might be considered cabinet cards. They are less than 1/2 the size of the regular cabinet cards, but are constructed the same way – a photo attached to a thick card.

I wonder if these are William Henderson Reece and Mary Lavina Montgomery Reece. They were taken by Tandy’s Studio, Broadway, Lincoln, Illinois:
