John Green (1789-after 1860) & Leah Dunn (1789-1854)

I believe that John Green and Leah Dunn are my 5x great grandparents, the grandparents of my 3x great grandmother Sarah Jane Green. I don’t know who Sarah’s parents were.

It’s very hard to untangle the Greens. Here’s my attempt. I would appreciate feedback from other researchers.

John Green was born about 1789 in Virginia. His parents are unknown.

Leah Dunn was born October 24, 1789 in Pennsylvania. Her parents are unknown.

John and Leah married December 28, 1808 in Mercer County, Kentucky.

There’s a John Green as head of a household in Mercer County, Kentucky on the 1910 US Census. There were 12 in the household: 1 male under age 10; 2 males aged 16-25 (John was 21); 2 females aged 16-25 (Leah was 21); 7 slaves.

In 1811, the name John Green appears on a petition to Congress by citizens of the Indiana territory complaining of the improper interference of their governor in elections.

On the 1820 US Census, John Green was head of a household in Washington, Knox County, Indiana. There were 7 in the household: 2 males under age 10; 1 male aged 10-15; 1 male aged 26-44 (John was 31); 2 females under age 10; 1 female aged 26-44 (Leah was 31).

On the 1830 US Census, John was head of a household in Washington County, Indiana. There were 14 in the household: 1 male under age 5; 1 male aged 5-9; 1 male aged 15-19; 1 male aged 40-49 (John was 41); 3 females under age 5; 1 female aged 5-9; 2 females aged 10-14; 2 females aged 15-19; 1 female aged 30-39 (Leah was 41); 1 female aged 70-79.

On the 1840 US Census, John Green was head of a household in Knox, Indiana. There were 5 in the home: 1 male aged 10-14; 1 male aged 15-19; 1 male aged 40-49 (John was 51); 1 female aged 10-14; 1 female aged 40-49 (Leah was 51).

On the 1850 US Census, the family lived in Knox County, Indiana. John and Leah were both 61. Others in the home were on Robert R. Green, age 24 and his wife Ruffina, age 26; son James J. Green, age 36; Washington Green, age 13 (son of their son William, living elsewhere with his wife and other children); Phoebe Green, age 4 (daughter of James); Thomas Green, age 1 (son of Robert & Ruffina) ; and Alfred Green, age 1 (son of James).

Leah died on March 4, 1854. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1860 US Census, John was 71 and lived in Palmyra, Knox County, Indiana. He lived with son William, age 49 and his wife and 7 children. That is the last record I have of John Green.

The children of John Green & Leah Dunn:

Based on Census reporting, they may have had 13 children. Others included on online family trees that I can’t find record of are: Samuel, born in 1808; Phoebe born in 1818; Harriet born in 1821; Eliza born in 1822. Marriages that took place in Knox County, Indiana between 1820 & 1840 include the following Greens: Solomon Green & Hannah Bray in 1832; Eliza Jane Green & Ad Scott in 1836; Phoebe Ann Green & George W. Purcell in 1836.

William E. Green – William was born about 1813 in Kentucky. He married Sarah Steffy on May 19, 1834 in Knox County, Indiana. They had a son and Sarah died shortly after. The son, Sylvester Washington Green, lived with William’s parents on the 1850 US Census. William married Sarah Palmer on March 20, 1838 in Knox County, Indiana. William and Sarah lived with his parents on the 1860 US Census with their 7 children. The last record I have of him is the 1870 US Census when he lived with his wife and 4 children in Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana.

James J. Green – James was born December 15, 1814 in Kentucky. He married Mary Palmer on September 19, 1836 in Knox County, Indiana. They had a daughter in 1846 and his wife died shortly after. He married Elizabeth House on September 25, 1848 in Knox County, Indiana. They had a son in 1849 and Elizabeth died in 1850. James lived with his parents on the 1850 US Census, along with his daughter Phoebe, age 4, and son Alfred, age 1. On the 1860 US Census, son Alfred lived with widowed Charles House (relationship unknown), and I can’t find James. James died February 3, 1868. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Robert R. Green – Robert was born October 9, 1824 in Indiana. He married Ruffina Steffy in 1847. They were found living with his parents on the 1850 US Census, along with their son Thomas, age 1. They had 3 more children, and Ruffina died in 1860. Robert married Catherine Fox on September 4, 1862 in Knox County, Indiana. They had 6 children. Robert died March 23, 1897. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

A granddaughter of John Green & Leah Dunn:

Sarah Jane Green – My 3x great grandmother Sarah was born April 16, 1835 in Kentucky. She married Caleb Green on December 13, 1853 in Harrison County, Indiana. (The record indicates that her “mother” Leah Green gave consent. ) Sarah & Caleb had 10 children. Sarah died on June 27, 1913 in Oakland City, Indiana. She was 78. Her Find A Grave memorial is here. Read more about her here.

Caleb Green (1832-1892) & Sarah Jane Green (1835-1913)

Caleb Green and Sarah Jane Green are my 3x great grandparents, the parents of my 2x great grandmother Elizabeth Anna Green.

Caleb Green was born February 1, 1832. He is the son of John Green and Talitha Cumi Adams.

Sarah Jane Green was born April 16, 1835. Many people list Sarah Jane’s last name as Sly. I can’t find any record of that. Her marriage record indicates that her last name was Green and that her mother Leah Green gave consent. I can’t find a Leah Sly in the area, but I do find a Leah Green. Leah would have been 46 when Sarah was born, so she could be her mother. On the 1840 US Census for the family of John Green and Leah Dunn, there are no girls under age 10, so perhaps they were actually her grandparents. I am going to consider them to be her parents for now. Sarah’s maiden and married last names were both Green. And, both her and Caleb’s fathers were John Green. But definitely different John Greens.

On the 1850 US Census, there was a 16 year old Sarah Green who lived with merchant Ephraim Griffith in Harrison County, Indiana. Emphraim’s wife was Mary Rusk, and there is a young man with the last name of Rusk living in the home too. I wonder if Sarah Green is a niece of this couple – Ephraim’s sister could have married a son of John and Leah Green, and died prior to 1850. It’s just a theory. This Sarah was 15 and living 100 miles away from John and Leah Green.

I can’t find Caleb on the 1850 US Census, but Caleb’s suspected mother Talitha Cunie, now married to Benjamin Sly, was in Harrison County, Indiana.

Caleb and Sarah married on December 13, 1853 in Harrison County, Indiana. Caleb was 21 and Sarah was 18. In 1854 they had a daughter and named her Talitha Leah, after both of their mothers.

On the 1860 US Census, Caleb was 28 and Sarah was 25. They were farming in Scott, Harrison County, Indiana. They had 3 children: Leah, age 5; Mary, age 4; Elizabeth, age 2.

From 1862 – 1865,  Caleb fought in the Civil War with Company D, 58th Indiana Infantry Regiment.

On the 1870 US Census, Caleb was 38 and Sarah was 35. They were farming in Monroe, Pike County, Indiana. They had 8 children in the home: Talitha, age 16; Mary, age 14; Elizabeth, age 12; Harriet, age 10; William, age 8; Jane, age 5; Martha, age 3; James, an infant.

On the 1880 US Census, Caleb was 48 and Sarah was 46. Caleb was a farmer and preacher, and the family lived in Monroe, Pike County, Indiana. They had 5 children at home: William, age 18; Irena, age 14; Martha, age 10; John, age 8; Fanny, age 4.

Caleb died on January 19, 1892. He was 59. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1900 US Census, Sarah was 65 and widowed. She lived in Columbia, Gibson County, Indiana with her widowed daughter Fannie Richey, Fannie’s son Walter, and another grandson, Floyd Julian. Sarah reported having had 11 children, with 7 of them living.

On the 1910 US Census, Sarah was 75 and lived in Greer, Warrick County, Indiana with son John W. Green, and his wife and children.

Sarah died on June 27, 1913 in Oakland City, Indiana. She was 78. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
