Isaac Short (1795-1858) and Susannah Combs (1798-1872)

Isaac Short and Susannah Combs are Todd’s 4X Great Grandparents.

Isaac Short was born in about 1794 in Virginia. He is thought to have been the son of Isaac Short and Dorcas.

Susannah Combs was born in about 1798 in Kentucky. Her parents are unknown.

Isaac and Susannah married around 1818.

On the 1820 US Census, Isaac was head of a household in Jefferson County, Indiana. There were 4 in the household: 1 male under age 10 (Isaac was a newborn); 1 male aged 26-44 (Isaac was 26); 1 female under age 10 (an unknown daughter); 1 female aged 16-25 (Susannah was 22).

I found two land records for purchases Isaac made in Vermillion County, Indiana. On June 1, 1831 he purchased 80 acres. On March 18, 1837 he purchased 40 acres.

On the 1840 US Census, Isaac was head of a in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana. There were 11 in the household: 2 males aged 5-9 (Elijah was 7 and Richard was 9); 1 male aged 10-14 (Amos was 11); 1 male aged 15-19 (Arthur was 12); 1 male aged 40-49 (Isaac was 46); 1 female under age 5 (Matilda was 4); 1 female aged 10-14 (Lydia was 6); 2 females aged 15-19 (Amassa was 13 and Dorcas was 17) ; 1 female aged 20-29; 1 female aged 30-39 (Susannah was 42); 1 female aged 60-69. The ages don’t match up perfectly, but it’s close.

On the 1850 US Census, Isaac was 55 and Susannah was 52. They lived in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana with 9 of their children: Isaac, age 30; Arthur, age 22; Richard, age 19; Amassa, age 23; Eliza, age 17; Matilda, age 14; Reuben, age 10; John, age 3; Susannah, age 1.

Isaac died September 8, 1858 in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana.

On the 1860 US Census, Susannah was 63 and lived in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana with son Reuben (Todd’s 3X Great Grandfather), his wife Sarah, and their daughter. Susannah’s daughter Susannah, age 11, was also in the home, along with a Nancy Lewis, age 60.

On the 1870 US Census, Susannah was 72 and lived in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana with son Elijah, his wife and their children. Also in the home is Nancy Lewis, age 69. Since Nancy lived with Susannah in 1860 and 1870, I wonder if they aren’t sisters. This could help me figure out who Susannah’s parents are.

Susannah died October 12, 1872 in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana.

The children of Isaac Short and Susannah Combs:

Isaac Short – Isaac was born January 1, 1820 in Hamilton, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Taylor in 1846 in Vermillion County, Indiana. They had 2 children. Elizabeth died in 1849, and Isaac married Mary Ann Kessler Harmon on December 7, 1851 in Vigo County, Indiana. They had 7 children. Isaac served in the Civil War with Company F, 126th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. He died April 1, 1882 in Indiana. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Dorcas Short – Dorcas was born in 1823 in Clermont, Ohio. She didn’t marry. She died in October of 1850 in Vermillion County, Indiana.

Amassa Short – Amassa was born February 1, 1827 in Hamilton, Ohio. She married John Smith on December 24, 1852 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He had been widowed and had at least 4 children from his first marriage. Amassa and John had 2 daughters. John died in 1880. Amassa married Bayless Rutherford on August 29, 1889 in Vermillion County, Indiana. She died November 10, 1911 in Montezuma, Parke County, Indiana. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Amos Short – Amos was born in 1828 in Ohio. He married Mary Ann Laswell on July 29, 1849 in Vermillion County, Indiana. They had at least one child. Amos’ sister Lydia was living with him on the 1850 US Census. I have no record of him after that census.

Arthur E. Short – Arthur was born in Clermont, Ohio in 1829. I have no record of him after the 1850 US Census.

Richard Short – Richard was born in May 1830 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Malinda Blakesley on October 28, 1856 in Vermillion County, Indiana. (Malinda’s sister Sarah married Richard’s brother Reuben. Richard is a widower living with his brother Reuben on the 1900 US Census.) They had a son. Richard died August 7, 1906 in Danville, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Martha Short – Martha was born about 1831 in Vermillion County, Indiana. I don’t find her listed with the family on the 1850 US Census, so she died prior to that, or was married.

Elijah Short – Elijah was born October 5, 1832 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Genette Gosnell on December 9, 1858 in Vermillion County, Indiana. They had 6 children. He died March 2, 1918 in Montezuma, Parke County, Indiana.

Lydia Ann Short – Lydia was born in 1834 in Vermillion County, Indiana. She is found living with her brother Amos on the 1850 US Census. She’s hard to figure out. I think she married Isaac Johnson on January 27, 1853 in Vermillion County, Indiana. I can’t find them on a census together. I think she married the widowed James Elliott Haddon after 1872. I found them on the 1880 US Census. I don’t think Lydia had children. She died in 1904 in Sullivan County, Indiana.

Matilda Short – Matilda was born in 1836 in Vermillion County, Indiana. She didn’t marry. She is found living with her sister Amassa on the 1860 and 1870 US Census. It’s possible that she had a son named Charley Beebe in about 1867, because he is listed under her name on the 1870 US Census. She died in 1874. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Reuben Levi Short – Reuben is Todd’s 3X Great Grandfather. Read about him here.

John Short – John was born in 1847. He is found on the 1860 US Census living with his brother Isaac, his wife and children. I don’t have record of him after that.

Susannah Short – Susannah was born in 1849. She married Wells Miller on May 31, 1866 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He had served in the Civil War. (Susannah collected a pension based on his service after his death in 1894.) I found Susannah and Wells on the 1880 US Census, with no children, living in Prairie, Edgar County, Illinois. I can’t find them after that.

Reuben Levi Short (1840-1906) and Sarah Blakesley (1839-1908)

Reuben Levi Short and Sarah Blakesley are Todd’s 3X Great Grandparents.

Todd’s mother Marilyn is in the DNA Circle for Reuben Levi Short at Ancestry.com.

Reuben Levi Short was born December 5, 1840 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He is the son of Isaac Short and Susannah Combs. Reuben is found living with them on the 1850 US Census in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Sarah Blakesley was born May 22, 1839 in Indiana. She was the daughter of Silas Blakesley and Sarah Edwards.

Reuben and Sarah were married in about 1856 in Vermillion County, Indiana.

On the 1860 US Census, Reuben was 20 and Sarah was 21. They lived in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana. They had a daughter, Melissa, age 3. Also in the home was Reuben’s mother Susannah, age 60; Rueben’s sister Susannah, age 11; and an unknown Nancy Louis, age 60. Nancy lives with Susannah on the 1870 US Census also, so I wonder if they were sisters.

Reuben enlisted to serve in the Civil War on August 11, 1862 in Indiana. He was in Company D, 85th Indiana Infantry. He was discharged June 12, 1865 near Washington DC.

On the 1870 US Census, the family was in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana. Reuben was 29 and Sarah was 30. They had 3 children at home: Laura J, age 10; Albert, age 8; and Malinda, age 2.

On the 1880 US Census, the family had relocated to Brouilletts, Edgar County, Illinois. Reuben was 39 and Sarah was 41. Children at home were: Laura, age 19; Albert, age 18; Lizzy, age 11; and Emma, age 8.

On the 1900 US Census, the family was back in Vermillion County, Indiana, in Elwood. Reuben was 59 and Sarah was 60. Reuben’s brother Robert, age 70, lived with them. They reported having been married 40 years and having 4 children, so it is possible that Reuben had a wife before Sarah and that Todd’s 2X Great Grandmother Melissa is from that marriage.

Reuben was admitted to the US Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Danville, Vermillion County, Indiana on July 30, 1903. He died there of pulmonary tuberculosis on August 7, 1906. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Sarah died of pulmonary tuberculosis also, on March 27, 1908 in Wayne, Henry County, Indiana.

The children of Reuben Levi Short and Sarah Blakesley:

Melissa Short – Melissa is Todd’s 2X Great Grandmother. Read about her here.

(Note: There’s a problem with birth dates for the following two children. Death certificates for Laura and Albert have them born 3 months apart in 1862. On the two census reportings when they were children, they are 1 and 2 years apart and Laura is older. Albert’s birth year appears consistently in documents as 1862, except the 1900 US Census, which says March 1861. Laura’s birth year varies from 1860-1861-1862-1864-1865. The 1900 US Census says January 1862. I suspect Laura was born in 1860 and Albert in 1862. Then there’s a break in births because Reuben was serving in the Civil War.)

Laura J. Short – Laura was born January 2, 1860 in Scottland, Edgar County, Illinois. She married Basil Thomas on February 26, 1886 in Douglas County, Illinois. They had 4 children. He died in 1910 and Laura married Joshua Kight.  She died January 22, 1931 in Paris, Edgar County, Illinois.

Albert Short – Albert was born in March 2, 1862 in Hillsdale, Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Francis Conley on December 10, 1881 in Ringgold County, Iowa. They had a son, and she died. He married Maggie Ladd on January 24, 1889 in Vermillion County, Indiana. They had no children. He died November 12, 1946 in St. Joseph County, Indiana.

Malinda Lizzy Short – Malinda was born in about 1869 or 1870. The only records I have for her is the 1870 US Census, where she is “Malinda L.” and the 1880 US Census where she is “Lizzy.”

Rosie Emma Short – Rosie was born in 1871. She married James Shanks in 1889. He was a laborer for the railroad and in the automobile industry. They had 8 children. She appears in Quaker meeting minutes for Vermillion County, Indiana. She died in 1962. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

James Addison Ruby (1850-1889) & Melissa Jane Short (1857-1916)

James & Melissa are Todd’s great great grandparents, the parents of his great grandmother Laura May Ruby.

James Addison Ruby was born on July 1, 1850 in Illinois. His parents are Bonerges Franklin Ruby and Mary “Polly” Blakesly. Read about them here. James was the oldest of their 3 children, and he had older and younger half-siblings. Bonerges fought in the Civil War, as did his brothers Milbern J. Ruby, Addison Sparks Ruby, Valentine G. Ruby, Joseph H. Ruby. You can see Bonerges’ Find A Grave memorial here. Bonerges’ great grandfather Peter Ruby II fought in the Revolutionary War and his great great grandparents Peter Ruby I and Anna Catherine Vanderhoven immigrated from Switzerland.

RUBY Addison SparksI have a booklet titled “Genealogy of the Ruby Family” written in 1926 by Addison Sparks Ruby. Let me know if you’d like a copy and I’d be happy to email you scans of it.

October 2017 – A Ruby cousin shared with me that PDFs of the book History of the Rubi-Ruby Families of Switzerland and America by Jay and Ruth Ruby are available here. I haven’t had time yet to explore it but wanted to let other Ruby hunters know that it’s there. Thank you Linda Jones for this tip!

Melissa Jane Short was born in 1857. Her parents are Reuben Levi Short & Sarah Blakesley. She was the oldest of their 5 children. Rueben served in the Civil War. You can see his Find A Grave memorial here.

On the 1850 US Census, James was a baby under a year old. His father Bonerges was 28 and his mother Polly was 27. Their daughter Sarah was 6. They were farming in Edgar, Illinois. Bonerges’ brothers Asa and Valentine and his mother Susannah were living nearby.

On the 1860 US Census, the family had moved to Washington, Iowa. James was 11. His father Bonerges was 38, and his mother Mary Polly isn’t found. I don’t know if they divorced or if she died. Sister Sarah was 16, Amos was 8, and Bartholomew was 5.

Meanwhile, Melissa was 3 and lived with her family in Vermillion, Indiana. Her father Rueben was 20 and her mother Sarah was 21. Also in the home was her grandmother Susannah, age 63, and Susannah’s own daughter Susannah, age 11.

On the 1870 US Census, Melissa was 13 and for some reason was living with the James Beatty family in Lawrence County, Indiana. Her parents and siblings were still in Vermillion County, Indiana. James, listed as Adisan Ruby, also lived in Hett, Vermillion County, Indiana. He was 20 years old and worked as a farmhand. He lived close to Melissa’s parents and coincidentally he boarded in a home along with the young woman who would become his future wife’s step grandmother.

James and Melissa were married on May 30, 1872 in Edgar County, Illinois. Melissa was 14 years old and James was 22.

On the 1880 US Census, James was said to be 28 (he was 30) and Melissa was said to be 26 (she was 22). They had two children: Josephine, age 7; and Melvin, age 1. They were farming in Jefferson, Iowa.

They had 2 more children: Mettie in 1889 and Laura May in 1884. James died in 1889. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Melissa married William H. Collins in 1892.

On the 1900 US Census, Melissa was said to be 47 (she was 43) and her husband William was 48. They farmed in Jefferson, Iowa. They’d been married 8 years and had three children: Etta, age 7; Goldie, age 6; Daisy, age 5. Also in the home was Laura May, age 15.

Melissa and William had two more children, daughter Olive in 1897 and son Hans in 1899. Both died in 1899.

On the 1910 US Census, Melissa was said to be 53 (and she really was!) and her husband William was 56. Their children in the home were Etta, age 18; Golda, age 16; Daisy, age 14. Melissa’s son from her first marriage, Melvin Perkins, age 32, also lived with them.

Melissa died on February 25, 1916 in Knowlton, Iowa. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
