Daniel Reece Perkins (1797-1866) and Rachel Herring (1806-1829)

Daniel Reece Perkins and Rachel Herring are Todd’s 4X Great Grandparents.

Todd’s mother Marilyn is in the DNA Circle for Daniel Reece Perkins and Rachel Herring.

Daniel Reece Perkins was born on April 22, 1797 in Livingston County, Kentucky. He was the son of Solomon Perkins and Elizabeth Miller. You can read about the family in a biography of Daniel’s brother Isaac and from another researcher of Daniel Reece Perkins here.

Rachel Herring was born in Kentucky in about 1806. She is the daughter of Isaac Herring and Unity Cannon. Isaac was a Baptist minister. Unity was born in Ireland. You can see Rachel’s parents’ Find A Grave memorials here and here.

Daniel and Rachel were married in about 1819 based on the birth of their first child, and probably in Franklin, Illinois. They had 6 children, including Todd’s 3X Great Grandfather Edward Perkins, and Rachel died in about 1828.

Daniel married Evelena Jones shortly after Rachel’s death, and they had 12 children.

On the 1830 US Census, Daniel was head of a household in Tazewell, Illinois. There were 7 in the household: 2 males under age 5 (Jacob was 3 and Daniel was 5); 2 males aged 5-9 (Edward was 8 and Isaac was 9); 1 male aged 10-14 (Solomon was 10); 1 male aged 30-39 (Daniel was 33); 1 female aged 20-29 (Evelena was 21).

On the 1840 US Census, Daniel was head of a household in Ward 2, Warren County, Illinois. There were 11 in the household: 1 male under age 5 (Joel was 5); 2 males age 5-9 (Charles was 6 and James was 9); 2 males age 10-14 (John was 10 and Jacob was 13); 1 male age 15-19 (Daniel was 15); 1 male age 20-29 (Isaac was 19); 1 male age 40-49 (Daniel was 43); 2 females under age 5 (Elizabeth was 1 and Mary was 4); 1 female aged 30-39 (Evelena was 31).

On the 1850 US Census, Daniel was 51 and Evelena was 41. They lived in Polk County, Iowa with their children: Charles, age 17; Joel, age 15; Mary, age 14; Elizabeth, age 10; Oliver, age 8; Zadock, age 7; Amanda, age 5; Neal, age 2.

Evelena died on March 4, 1851 in Warren County, Iowa. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Daniel married Frances Sharp on October 11, 1851 in Polk County, Iowa.

On the 1853 Iowa Census, Daniel is found in Greenfield, Warren County, Iowa. The family included 5 males, 4 females, 1 voter and 1 member of the militia.

On May 1, 1855 Daniel purchased 40 acres in Warren County, Iowa.

On the 1860 US Census, Daniel was 63 and Frances was 54. They lived in Greenfield, Warren County, Iowa. Their children in the home were: Oliver, age 18; Zadock, age 17; Amanda, age 15; Neal, age 13; Margaret, age 9.

Daniel died on November 30, 1866 in Prole, Warren County, Iowa. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

The children of Daniel Reece Perkins and Rachel Herring:

Isaac Herring Perkins – Isaac was born in 1823 in Illinois according to his 1864 Civil War Draft Registration. He married Eliza Ann Holeman. The marriage record says they were married March 2, 1862 in Warren County, Illinois. If he was married only once, to Eliza Ann Holeman, then the marriage year is about 20 years off. They had 9 children. He died after 1880.

Edward Perkins – Edward is Todd’s 3X Great Grandfather. Read about him here.

Daniel Reece Perkins – Daniel was born December 19, 1825. Daniel married Mariah Lieurance on January 18, 1844 in Warren County, Illinois. They had 11 children. Daniel fought with the 34th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry in the Civil War. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

John J. Perkins – John was born in 1829 in Illinois. He married Margaret Hedges on April 25, 1850 in Polk County, Iowa. They are found on the 1850 US Census living in Des Moines, Iowa. I don’t have record of them after that.

James H. Perkins – James was born in 1831 in Illinois. He married Mary Elizabeth Woody. They had a child in Iowa in 1851, moved to Oregon and had 4 more children, then moved to California and had another child. They divorced and his wife remarried in 1869. In 1870 he was living in California. He died there in June of 1879.

Charles W. Perkins – Charles was born in 1834 in Illinois. He married Elizabeth Hill on August 13, 1858 in Warren County, Iowa.

Joel Perkins – Joel was born in 1835 in Illinois. He married Amanda Brown on February 20, 1859 in Marion County, Iowa. They had 1 child. They moved to Oregon after 1910 and are found there on the 1920 US Census. Their daughter Mary lived there.

Mary Ann Perkins – Mary was born in 1836 in Illinois. She married William Hill on August 28, 1854 in Warren County, Iowa.  They had at least 4 sons. William died serving int he Civil War. She married George Snider on May 9, 1867 in Warren County, Iowa. He had served in the Civil War. She had 12 children in all, and only 6 were alive in 1900 as indicated on the census. She died in 1917. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Elizabeth Perkins – Elizabeth was born in 1839 in Illinois. She married Peter Black on June 15, 1855 in Warren County, Iowa. They had 14 children. She died May 10, 1905. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Oliver Harper Perkins – Oliver was born on January 20, 1841 in Illinois. He married Adaline Iowa Brown on April 20, 1862 in Marion County, Iowa. They had 9 children. Sometime after 1900 they moved from Kansas to Washington State where they are found on the 1910 US Census. Oliver died April 3, 1912 in Republic, Ferry County, Washington.

Zadock Casey Perkins – Zadock was born September 22, 1843 in Iowa. He served in the Civil War. He married Mary Lieurance on August 19, 1869 in Warren County, Iowa. They had 7 children. Zadock died September 10, 1906 in Greenfield, Adair County, Iowa. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Amanda Perkins – Amanda was born on April 20, 1846. She married Samuel Spring on October 12, 1865 in Warren County, Iowa. They had at least 4 children. She died on January 21, 1897. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Neal Jonathan Perkins – Neal was born in December of 1847. He served in Company D of the Iowa 2nd Cavalry Regiment in the Civil War. He had lied about his age to enlist, and deserted a year later. He was caught after two days, found guilty and court-martialed, and restored to duty. (He was later granted a disability pension for his service.) He married Caroline Gilfillen on December 18, 1867 in Warren County, Iowa. They divorced in 1869. He married Anna Augustine on December 17, 1870 in Adair County, Iowa. They had 7 children. She died in 1913 and he married Frances L. Sedgewick on September 25, 1913 in Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas. Less than a year later, Frances tried to get his pension based on abandonment, and he countered that she had abandoned him. They divorced. He died in May of 1916 in Rosedale, Wyandotte County, Kansas.

Margaret Perkins – Margaret was born in December of 1850 in Iowa. She married John William Pugh on December 21, 1868 in Warren County, Iowa. They must have quickly divorced because he remarried 9 months later. She marred Peter Hookstra on December 28, 1871 in Polk County, Iowa. They must have divorced quickly because he was remarried and had a child in 1876. Margaret married Samuel Augustine on March 16, 1878 in Guthrie, Iowa. They had 6 children. They last record I have of her is the 1920 US Census when she lived in Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas with husband Samuel. (On the 1900 US Census, Margaret said she was married twice, so it’s possible one of the marriages I have noted here was only a license that didn’t result in a marriage.)

Edward Perkins (1822-1897) & Sarah Huffman (1819-1891)

This is a photo taken in 1884 of Todd’s 3x great grandparents, Edward Perkins & Sarah Huffman, and many of their children and grandchildren.

PERKINS Edward HUFFMAN Sarah family 1884 black and white

What you see above is a photo I took of a *photocopy* of the photo. The photocopy was marked in pencil identifying some of the people. I took a photo, then erased the lines and took the photo above.

Here’s what I know:
Starting at the ground level on the left, there’s Edward & Sarah Huffman Perkins. Standing behind them is Adam Huffman Perkins. (He was married and had 6 children ages 11-4). Standing on the porch between the first two pillars is Mary Elizabeth Perkins Lockridge. (She was married and had 5 children ages 21-3. The man standing on the balcony at the far left is marked as Joseph, and may be her husband Joseph Lockridge.) The man seated holding a child is Benjamin Franklin Perkins. (He was not yet married, and had no children.) Next, the couple standing in front of the middle pillars is Elzira Perkins Gray and her husband Thomas S. Gray. (They had 3 children ages 6-1.) The man in front of the pillar isn’t marked, but I wonder if it’s their son Thomas J. Perkins, their only living child not indicated to be in the photo. He was married and had 4 children ages 11-2). Next to him, mostly hidden, standing to the right of the pillar is Rebecca Perkins Wiedmer. (She was not yet married and had no children). Next to her is Martin VanBuren Perkins. (He was widowed and had 2 children ages 9 & 3). Edward & Sarah had lost two children prior to this photo: Daniel R. died in the Civil War, and Elvira had died in 1877.

Edward Perkins was born April 3, 1822 in Franklin, Illinois. His father is Daniel Reece Perkins and you can see his Find A Grave memorial here. His mother was Rachel Herring. Read about them here.

Sarah Huffman was born on January 4, 1819 in West Virginia. Her parents are unknown.

On the 1830 US Census, Edward was in Tazewell, Illinois with his parents and siblings, and on the 1840 US Census he was in Warren County, Illinois, with his parents and siblings. Later that year, Edward and Sarah married on August 27, 1840 in Warren County, Illinois.

On the 1850 US Census, Edward was 28 and Sarah was 30. They had moved to Iowa, which was confusing at first because they went from Warren County, Illinois to Warren County, Iowa. They were farming. They had 4 children: Mary, age 9; Daniel, age 7; Martin, age 5; and Adam, age 2.

On the 1860 US Census, Edward was 38 and Sarah was 41, and they were still farming in Warren County, Iowa. There were 9 children in the home: Mary, 18; Daniel, 17; Martin, 14; Adam, 12; Thomas, 10; Rebecca, 8; Elvira, 5; Elzira, 5; Benjamin, 2.

On the 1870 US Census, Edward was 48 and Sarah was 51 and they continued to farm in Warren County, Iowa. Six children were at home: Adam, 22; Thomas, 20; Rebecca, 18; Elvira, 15; Elzira, 15; Benjamin, 11. Son Daniel had died in the Civil War. Mary and Martin were married.

On the 1880 US Census, Edward was 58 and Sarah was 60. Three children remained at home: Rebecca, age 28; Benjamin, age 21; and an adopted son Frankie, age 6. I can’t find further information on Frankie. Their daughter Elvira had died.

The photo above was taken in 1884.

Sarah died on March 17, 1891 in Warren County, Iowa. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Edward died on February 19, 1897 in Warren County, Iowa. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

The children of Edward Perkins & Sarah Huffman:

Mary Elizabeth Perkins – Mary was born on August 16, 1841. She married Joseph Hall Lockridge on June 23, 1861 in Warren County, Iowa. (Her brother Adam would eventually marry Joseph’s sister Mary Jane.) Mary and Joseph farmed and had 5 children. Mary died on February 12, 1906. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Daniel R. Perkins – Daniel was born in 1843. He enlisted in Iowa to serve in the Civil War on August 19, 1862, when he was 19 years old. He died in that war.

Martin VanBuren Perkins – Martin is Todd’s great great grandfather. Read about him here.

Adam Huffman Perkins – Adam was born on March 23, 1848. He married Mary Jane Lockridge on June 9, 1872 in Warren County, Iowa. (His sister Mary married Mary Jane’s brother Joseph.) Adam and Mary Jane had 8 children, and were farmers. He died April 26, 1922 in Warren County, Iowa. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Thomas J. Perkins – Thomas was born in 1850. He married Sophia Jane Burkhead on December 31, 1874 in Warren County, Iowa. They had 9 children. He died on February 8, 1891 in Warren County. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Rebecca Jane Perkins – Rebecca was born on August 6, 1852 in Prole, Iowa. She married Absalom D. Weidner on April 1, 1883 in Warren County, Iowa. They had 4 children. She died on December 9, 1938 in Sedan, Kansas. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Elvira & Elzira Perkins – They were born on October 27, 1855. Elvira married Thomas Smith Gray on July 3, 1875 in Warren, Iowa. She died on March 29, 1877. Her Find A Grave memorial is here. (There’s a child named Bertha C. Gray, who was born and died in 1870, said to be the daughter of Elvira and Thomas. However, both parents would have been 15 and the birth of the child was 5 years before their marriage, so I doubt this information. Also, to further confuse things, there is another Elvira Perkins, who was born the same year and married in Warren County, Iowa. Her father was Isaac O. Perkins and her mother was Margaret Dyer. I don’t know if they are related. Edward has a brother named Isaac but this isn’t him. This Elvira married Isaiah Albert Leirle in 1871 and died in 1930.) Elzira married her sister’s widow on November 12, 1877. They had 3 children. Elzira died prior to August 1889 when Thomas married Mary Etta Davis. However, I can’t find her death or burial information. She doesn’t seem to be buried in Linn Grove cemetery where most of her family, including her parents, sister, and husband, are buried. Thomas died on September 30, 1893. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Benjamin Franklin Perkins – Benjamin was born on March 8, 1858 in Warren County, Iowa. He married Mary Anna Allcock on August 18, 1886 in Warren County, Iowa. They had 3 children. He died in 1927. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Frankie – On the 1880 US Census, an adopted 6 year old son Frankie is listed. He was born in Iowa and his parents were born in Iowa. I have no further record of him.
