Sarah Sally Sheppard was born on March 6, 1800 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Her parents are Lewis Washington Sheppard and Ally Johnson. Lewis served in the War of 1812. You can see Lewis’ Find A Grave memorial here.

Joshua Hopper III married Sarah Sally Sheppard on November 20, 1820 in Adair County, Kentucky. He was 25 and she was 20.

On the 1830 US Census, Joshua was head of a household in Russell, Kentucky. He would have been 35 but both he and his wife were enumerated in the 20-29 year old columns. They had 3 sons under the age of 5 (Stephen, Theophilus, Joseph); 1 son between 5 & 9 (Joshua IV); and 1 daughter under 5 (Rhoda). They also had 8 slaves: 2 males under 10; 1 male between 10 & 23; 1 male between 55 & 99; 1 female under 10; 1 female between 10 & 23; 2 females between 24 & 35.

On the 1840 US Census, the family has moved to Rawlings, Greene County, Illinois, and they no longer had slaves. They lived close to Joshua’s parents who are enumerated as a household of 2, a man and a woman both between the ages of 50 & 59, which matches their ages. However, both Joshua and Sarah are again enumerated in the 20-29 year old column. They are said to have 1 son under 5; 1 daughter under 5; and 1 daughter between the ages of 10 & 14. However, they had 12 children, all living, ranging in age from 19 to 2.
