Ephraim Davis (1800-1865) & Anna McClure (1800-1840)

Updated October 2020.

Ephraim Davis and Anna McClure are Todd’s 3x Great Grandparents.

Ephraim Davis was born in about 1800 in Pennsylvania. His parents were probably Francis Davis and Sarah Elliott.

Anna McClure was born in about 1800.  Her parents were probably Charles McClure and Catherine Houston.

Ephraim and Anna were married in about 1824 (based on the birth of their first child), probably in Pennsylvania since their 3 oldest children were born there.

On the 1840 US Census, the family was in Ashland County, Ohio. They moved here prior to the birth of their 4th child in May of 1834. They were a family of 6: 1 male under age 5 (Ephraim was 4); 2 males aged 5-9 (William was 9 and Henry was 6); 1 male aged 40-49 (Ephraim was 40); 1 female aged 10-14 (Nancy was 12); 1 female aged 20-29 (hmmm, Anna was 40). Their son McClure Davis, age 15, isn’t accounted for.

Anna McClure Davis’s headstone is hard to read, but appears to say she died in 1840. However, in his will Ephraim refers to daughter Margaret (born in 1844) as one of his “5 oldest children” and doesn’t list her as a child with his 2nd wife Rachel (who he married 4 years after Margaret’s birth). Anna’s Find A Grave memorial is here. I suspect that Anna actually died in or after 1844.

Ephraim married Rachel Budd on July 6, 1848 in Richland, Ohio.

On the 1850 US Census, Ephraim is 50 and Rachel is 33. They lived in Vermillion, Ashland County, Ohio. Children in the home are McClure, age 23; William, age 18; Henry, age 16; Ephraim, age 13; and Margaret, age 6. (Listed next on the census is McClure Davis, living alone, age 33, a teacher. I don’t know how he’s related.)

The 1850 Agriculture Schedule for Vermillion, Ashland County, Ohio lists the following for Ephraim Davis:
48 acres of land, improved, 27 acres of land unimproved
$1500 cash value of farm
$75 cash value of farming implements and machinery
3 horses, 3 milch cows, 3 other cattle, 12 sheep, 13 swine
$250 value of live stock
173 bushels of wheat
28 bushels of rye
250 bushels of Indian corn
150 bushels of oats

On the 1860 US Census, Ephraim was 60 and Rachel was 43 (though the census says 53). They lived in Vermillion, Ashland County, Ohio. They have 6 kids at home: Ephraim Jr., age 22, and a physician; Margaret, age 16; Jared, age 9; Mary, age 8; Elizabeth, age 2; and Susan, age 9 months. Ephraim Jr. died less than a month later.

The 1860 Agriculture Schedule for Vermillion, Ashland County, Ohio lists the following for Ephraim Davis:
65 acres of land, improved, 20 acres of land unimproved
$3400 cash value of farm
$100 cash value of farming implements and machinery
3 horses, 3 milch cows, 3 other cattle, 9 sheep, 9 swine
$530 value of live stock
175 bushels of wheat
100 bushels of Indian corn
300 bushels of oats
38 pounds of wool

Ephraim died in 1865. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1870 US Census, widowed Rachel was 52 and remained in Vermillion, Ashland County, Ohio. Her 4 biological children were still at home: Jared, age 19; Mary, age 18; Elizabeth, age 12; and Susan, age 10. (Mary’s future husband, Paxton Applegate, lived next door.)

Rachel died in June 14, 1879. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

The children of Ephraim Davis & Anna McClure:

Note: Ephraim’s will is available at Ancestry.com. He refers to his children with 2nd wife Rachel by name, and he refers to his “5 oldest children,” those with Anna, by name also. He had a 6th child with Anna, Ephraim Jr., who died prior to the will.

McClure Davis – McClure was born in February 23, 1825 in Pennsylvania. He married Mary J. Baker on March 10, 1853 in Ashland County, Ohio. They had 5 children. His Find A Grave memorial is here, but at the time of this writing the date of death listed is actually the date of death for his son McClure Jr. (1909). We don’t know when this McClure Davis died. His headstone only lists the year he was born, though both birth and death is listed for his wife.

Nancy Davis – Nancy was born on July 20, 1828 in Pennsylvania. She married Carmi Maffett in about 1849 in Pennsylvania. They had at least 7 children. She died on April 4, 1895 in Ashland County, Ohio. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

William Davis – William is Todd’s 3x Great Grandfather. Read about him here.
