Greenup Morgan (1832-?) & Mary Sarah Smith (1833-?)

October 2020.

Greenup Morgan & Mary Sarah Smith were Todd’s 3x great grandparents.

Greenup Morgan was born in about 1832 in Tennessee. His parents were Nathan Morgan and Jane. Greenup’s first or middle name might have been William, as he was listed as William Morgan on the death certificate of daughter Mollie.

Mary Sarah Smith was born in about 1833 in Missouri. Her parents were John Smith and Mary.

On the 1850 US Census, Mary was 16 and lived in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri with her mother Mary, age 53; father John, age 50; brother John, age 27; sister Martha, age 23; and brother Gerrard, age 9.

On the 1850 US Census, Greenup was 18, and lived in DeKalb County, Missouri with father Nathan, age 56; mother Jane, age 52; brother Hiram, age 20; brother Simeon, age 15; and brother John, age 12.

Greenup and Mary were married on January 23, 1856 in Clay County, Missouri.

On the 1860 US Census, Greenup was 27 and Mary was 24. They farmed in Washington, DeKalb County, Missouri. They had one child, daughter Nancy J., who was 1.

It seems likely that Greenup served in the Civil War. At least two of his brothers did. His registration for the Civil War is the last record I find for him.

On the 1870 US Census, Mary was 34, and she lived with her brother John, age 38, and daughters Nancy, age 11, Sarah, age 9, and Mollie, age 6. They were farming in Sherman, DeKalb County, Missouri.

On the 1880 US Census, Mary was 47, and she lived in Craig, Holt County, Missouri with daughter Mary, age 16; daughter Sarah, age 19; Sarah’s husband Henry Dunigan, age 23; and their child Charles, age 1. This is the last record I have of Mary.
