Mary Jane Workman was born in 1804. She was a daughter of Abraham Workman and Margaret Lightner.

William and Mary married in about 1823 based on their oldest child’s birth in 1824, likely in Tennessee.

On the 1830 US Census, William was head of a household of 5 in Warren County, Tennessee: 1 male under age 5 (Phillip was 4); 1 male aged 5-9 (James was 6); 1 male aged 10-14; 1 male aged 15-19 (unknown); 1 male aged 20-29 (William was 26); 1 female under age 5 (Elizabeth was 1); 1 female aged 20-29 (Mary was 26); 1 female aged 50-59 (perhaps William’s mother Sarah).

In 1838 William appears of the Tax List for Madison County, Arkansas Territory.

On the 1850 US Census, William was 46 and Nancy was 32. They farmed in Prairie, Madison County, Arkansas. Children at home were: John, age 12; William, age 9; Hetty, age 6; Martin, age 5; Mary, age 2; Winnie, an infant. Also in the home was Sarah Harp, age 60.

William purchased land in Washington County, Arkansas in 1854, 1859, and 1860.

On the 1860 US Census, William was 60 and Nancy was 40. They farmed in Elm Springs, Washington County, Arkansas. Children at home were: John, age 21, and his wife Mary, age 18; William, age 18; Hester, age 16; Martin, age 13; Mary, age 12; Winnie, age 10; Elizabeth, age 6; Carlton, age 4; Narcissa, age 2; Harriett, and infant.
