Isaac Hedrick (1835-1869) & Minerva Mathes (1844-1868)

Isaac Hedrick & Minerva Mathes are my 3X great grandparents, the parents of my 2x great grandfather Sigle Hedrick.

Isaac Hedrick was born in about 1835 in Tennessee. I think Isaac’s parents are Jonathan Hedrick and Elizabeth Travilian. I wrote about it here.

Minerva Mathes was born in about 1844. She was a daughter of David Mathes & Elizabeth Allen. Read about them here.

On the 1850 US Census, Isaac was 15 and lived with the family of Jesse and Mary Swope in Pettis County, Missouri. Mary was likely Isaac’s aunt, and she was the daughter of Johann Jost “Joseph” Hedrick and Sarah.

I can’t find Minerva on the 1850 US Census.

Isaac & Minerva married on August 12, 1858 in Stone County, Missouri. He was about 23 and she was about 14.

On the 1860 US Census, Isaac and Minerva lived in Buchanan, Taney County, Missouri. Isaac was 25 and Minerva was 16. Minerva’s mother and sister lived close, along with many of her brothers, and their last name had changed to Mathews.

Isaac and Minerva had 2 sons.

Cousin Larry Hedrick of Hot Springs, Arkansas says “In 1868 Isaac, Minerva and their two sons were living in Galena, Stone County, Missouri.  Family tradition is that both were teaching school.  An influenza outbreak in December of that year took the life of Minerva.  Isaac died about a month later in the same epidemic early in 1869.  Both were buried in the Railey Creek Cemetery near Galena.  The two young sons were raised by Minerva’s brother and their uncle, Wylie Green Mathis.”

Isaac was about 34 and Minerva was about 25. You can see Isaac’s Find A Grave memorial here and Minerva’s here.
