David Hustead (1783-1821) & Jane Maxwell (1795-1821)

David Hustead and Jane Maxwell are my 4x great grandparents, the parents of my 3x great grandmother Sarah Hustead.

Most of what I know about David and Jane was documented in David’s family’s Bible and transcribed and shared on Ancestry.com. The Bible included the marriage of David to Jane Maxwell, births of David and his children, and the deaths of David, his wife, and his daughter Jane. David’s children are listed in his father’s will.

David Hustead was born in September 8, 1783 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He was son of Robert Hustead and Sarah McDonald. Robert fought in the Revolutionary War, as did his father John.

Jane Maxwell  was born about 1795 in Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of James Maxwell and Nancy Ann Grant. James was born in Armegh, Ireland and fought in the Revolutionary War. This information was found in Lineage Book, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Vol. CIX 1929.

David and Jane married on December 22, 1811. (Around the same time, Jane’s sister Elizabeth married David’s brother Alexander.)

On the 1820 US Census, David Hustead was head of a household of 8 in Springhill, Fayette County, Pennsylvania: 1 male under age 10 (Robert was 7); 1 male aged 16-25 (unknown, not their child); 1 male aged 26-44 (David was 36); 4 females under age 10 (Lydia was 8, Ann was 5, Sarah was 3, and Maria was 1); 1 female aged 26-44 (Jane was 25).

Jane died February 19, 1821, 8 days after giving birth to her 6th child, a daughter named Jane. She was about 26 years old. David died April 14, 1821  when he was 37 years old. Their daughter Jane died April 38, 1821, at age 2 months and 19 days old.

David’s father Robert Hustead died in 1838. His will named David’s son as Robert and David’s daughters as Lydia, Ann, Sarah, and Maria.
