James E. Reece (1820-1901) & Nancy Ann Anthony (1823-after 1910)

James E. Reece & Nancy Ann Anthony are Todd’s 3X Great Grandparents. Todd’s mother’s DNA puts her into the DNA Circle for both James and Nancy.

James has two known brothers, Joseph and John.

Nancy Ann Anthony was born in Ohio. She is the daughter of Jacob Anthony (born in New Jersey) and Mary Ellen Davis (born in Ireland.) Read about her parents and siblings in this blog post.

James and Nancy were married by Reverend Jacob Delay on August 17, 1843 in Jackson County, Ohio.

Jacob Anthony (1788-1852) & Mary Ellen Davis (1783-1854)

Jacob Anthony and Mary Ellen Davis are Todd’s 4X Great Grandparents.

Jacob Anthony was born He is the son of George Anthony and Catherine Piper. Todd’s mother Marilyn is in the DNA Circles at Ancestry.com for George and Catherine. George Anthony served in the Revolutionary War. You can read about it on his Find A Grave memorial here. Catherine’s Find A Grave memorial is here. Jacob is listed as Dr. Jacob Anthony on the list of children on their memorials, and on his own Find A Grave memorial, but I haven’t found record of him being a doctor. He was listed as a farmer on the 1850 US Census.

Mary Ellen Davis was born in 1783 in Downs, Northern Ireland. Her parents are unknown. There was a Davis family in Jackson County, Ohio who are the right ages to be her parents, Walter Davis & Mary Tracy. They were born in what would become the United States, and they had a daughter named Mary who was much younger than our Mary. Perhaps our Mary Davis is the one who arrived in Philadelphia on December 9, 1806 on Ship Brothers, having left the port of Londonderry  in Northern Ireland. No other Davis’ were onboard.

Jacob and Mary married in about 1810, considering the birth of their first child born in 1812 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

On the 1820 US Census, the household of Jacob Anthony is in Clinton, Jackson County, Ohio. Households of William Anthony and George Anthony are close by. There were 5 people in Jacob’s household: 1 male aged 26-44 (Jacob was 32); 3 females under age 10 (Catherine was 8; Mary Jane was 4; Matilda was 2); 1 female aged 26-44 (Mary Ellen was 37). One person was engaged in agriculture.

On the 1830 US Census, the household of Jacob Anthony was in Washington, Jackson County, Ohio. There were 7 in the household: 1 male under age 5 (Samuel was 4); 1 male aged 30-39 (Jacob was 42); 1 female aged 5-9 (Nancy was 7); 2 females aged 10-14 (Matilda was 12; Mary Jane was 14); 1 female aged 15-19 (Catherine was 18); 1 female aged 40-49 (Mary Ellen was 47). The households of Jacob’s brothers George Anthony and Nicholas Anthony were nearby.

On the 1840 US Census, the household of Jacob Anthony was still located in Washington, Jackson County, Ohio. There were households nearby of Jacob’s brother Nicholas Anthony and a mystery Jacob Anthony, Jr., who is the son of a different Jacob Anthony. Our Jacob’s household totaled 5: 1 male aged 10-14 (Samuel was 14); 1 male aged 50-59 (Jacob was 52); 1 female aged 15-19 (Nancy was 17); 1 female aged 20-29 (Matilda was 22); 1 female aged 50-59 (Mary Ellen was 57).

On the 1850 US Census, the family remained in Washington, Jackson County, Ohio. Jacob was 62 and a farmer. Mary was 66. Also living in their home was John H. Davis, age 17, and a farmer. (I suspect he’s a clue to Mary Ellen’s extended family.) Living next door was their daughter Nancy Ann’s family.

Jacob died December 15, 1852 in Ohio. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Mary Ellen died on February 11, 1854 in Ohio. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
