John Kinsel (1797-1852) and Sophenia Daymude (1810-1876)

Updated November 2020.

John Kinsel and Sophenia Daymude are Todd’s 3X Great Grandparents.

John Kinsel was born in 1797 in Virginia. He was the son of Michael Kinsel and Nancy Lane. Read more about them here.

Sophenia Daymude was born in 1810 in Virginia. She is thought to be the brother of James Fenton Daymude, who married John Kinsel’s sister. The marriage record for James Daymude and Ann Kinsel states that James’ father is Jacob Daymude.

John and Sophenia married on March 8, 1829 in Loudoun County, Virginia. The marriage record states that Sophenia was the ward of John Kinsel, which would seem to indicate┬áthat her parents had died. However, the Jacob Daymude I find in Loudoun County, Virginia who is assumed to┬áhave been her father didn’t die until the 1860s.

On the 1830 US Census, John Kinsel was head of a household in Cameron, Loudoun County, Virginia. There were 4 in the household: 1 male aged 10-14; 1 male aged 20-29 (John was 33); 1 female under age 5; 1 female aged 15-19 (Sophenia was 20).

On the 1840 US Census, John Kinsel was head of a household in Madison, Perry County, Ohio. There were 6 in the household: 1 male aged 5-9; 1 male aged 30-39 (John was 43); 1 female under age 5; 1 female aged 5-9; 1 female aged 10-14; 1 female aged 20-29 (Sophenia was 30).

Sometime after 1849 the family moved to McLean County, Illinois. I can’t find the family on the 1850 US Census. I do find 3 Kinsel families on the 1850 US Census in Perry County, Ohio – John’s mother Nancy Lane Kinsel lived with her daughter Frances Kinsel Daymude and family; John’s brother Thomas’ family; and John’s brother George’s family. There were no Kinsel’s found on the 1850 US Census in McLean County, Illinois.

John died in 1852 in McLean County, Illinois according to a published biography of his son John. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1860 US Census, Sophenia was head of a household in Dry Grove, McLean County, Illinois. She was 45 and farming. Her children in the home, all said to have been born in Ohio, were: Jacob, age 19; Nancy, age 16; Jay (John), age 10; Ellen, age 11.

On December 29, 1863, Sophenia married Henry Pease in McLean County, Illinois.

On the 1870 US Census, Sophenia was 57 and widowed. She lived in Bellflower, McLean County, Illinois, with daughter Ellen and her family.

Sophenia died on February 15, 1876 in Ringgold County, Iowa, where she lived with her son John. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
