Jeremiah Hampton (1792-1854) and Pamelia Worster (1801-1885)

Jeremiah Hampton and Pamelia Worster are Todd’s 3X Great Grandparents.

Jeremiah Hampton was born in about 1792 (maybe 1794) in Fauquier County, Virginia. He is the son of Joseph Hampton and Mary Hathway. Read about them here.

Pamelia Worster was born January 19, 1801. She is the daughter of John Worster and Sarah Elizabeth Thomas. John fought in the American Revolution. Read about them here.

Jeremiah fought in the War of 1812 with the Virginia Militia.

Jeremiah and Pamelia were married on September 7, 1815.

On the 1820 US Census, Jeremiah headed a household in Truro Parish, Fairfax County, Virginia. There were 7 in the household: 1 male under age 10 (probably Andrew as an infant); 1 male aged 26-44 (Jeremiah was 28); 1 female under age 10 (Mary was 1); 1 female aged 16-25 (Pamelia was 19); 1 male slave aged 14-25; 1 female slave under age 14; 1 female slave aged 14-25.

On the 1830 US Census, Jeremiah headed a household in Fauquier County, Virginia. There were 8 in the household: 1 male under age 5 (Andrew was 1); 1 male aged 5-9 (unknown); 1 male aged 30-39 (Jeremiah was 38); 1 female aged 5-9 (unknown); 1 female aged 10-14 (Mary was 11); 1 female aged 15-19 (unknown); 1 female aged 20-29 (Pamelia was 29); 1 male slave under age 10.

The family moved to Ohio, where slavery was outlawed. On the 1840 US Census, Jeremiah headed a household in Gratiot, Licking County, Ohio. There were 5 in the family: 1 male under age 5 (could be Francis as a newborn); 1 male aged 10-14 (Andrew was 11); 1 male aged 40-49 (Jeremiah was 48); 1 female aged 5-9 (Sarah was 6); 1 female aged 30-39 (Pamelia was 39).

On the 1850 US Census, the family lived in Hopewell, Licking County, Ohio. Jeremiah was 58 and worked as a butcher. Pamelia was 50. Four children were at home: Andrew, age 21; Sarah, age 17; Francis, age 11; and Susan “Jennie”, age 5.

Jeremiah died on December 19, 1854. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1860 US Census, Pamelia was age 69 and a widow. She lived in Hudson, McLean County, Illinois with daughter Jane, age 16; married daughter Sarah Porter, age 25; Sarah’s husband Samuel, age 30, a farmer; and their children Emma, age 3; Laura, age 1. Pamelia’s occupation is “domestic.”

On the 1880 US Census, Pamelia was age 79. She lived in Norman, McLean County, Illiniois, with daughter Jennie Bowles, age 35; Jennie’s husband Henry Bowles, age 35; and their son Oscar, age 8.

Pamelia died on September 26, 1885 in Hudson, McLean County, Illinois. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

The known children of Jeremiah Hampton and Pamelia Worster:

Mary Alcinda Hampton – Mary was born on October 2, 1819 in Fauquier County, Virginia. She married Thomas Landes in Ohio. He was a farmer and carpenter. They had 6 children. She died April 23, 1904 in Norman, McLean County, Illinois. Her obituary says that she is the oldest of 12 children, with only her youngest sister Jennie surviving her. Census records on the family indicate the possibly of only 2 unidentified children, who would have been born between 1820 and 1830, and died prior to 1840. Perhaps 5 more siblings were born and died without ever showing up on a census.

Andrew Hampton – Andrew was born about 1829 in Ohio. The sources I have for Andrew are the 1850 US Census, plus mention of him being the son of this couple on Find A Grave and Ancestry.com family trees. It is said that Andrew married Sarah Ann Porter, and they had 4 children. I can find no record. He died prior to 1904 when older sister Mary died.

Sarah Louisa Hampton – Sarah was born in November 22, 1834. She married Samuel Porter, a farmer, on May 30, 1854 in Muskingum County, Ohio. They had 8 children. She died January 30, 1901 in Hudson, McLean County, Illinois. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Francis M. “Frank” Hampton – Frank is Todd’s 2X Great Grandfather. Read about him here.

Susan Jane “Jennie” Hampton – Jennie was born about 1845 in Ohio. She married Henry Bowles. They had 3 children, but only one lived long enough to appear on a census. Jennie died on June 17, 1925 in Los Angeles County, California. She lived there with her son Oscar.

Francis Marion Hampton (1840-1899) & Nancy Jane Kinsel (1844-1913)

Frank & Nancy are Todd’s great great grandparents, the parents of his great grandmother Katherine P. Hampton.

Francis “Frank” Marion Hampton was born in 1840 in Ohio. His parents are Jeremiah Hampton (who fought in the War of 1812) and Pamelia Worster (whose father is said to be John Worster, who fought in the Revolutionary War, but I haven’t proven a connection.) You can see Jeremiah’s Find A Grave memorial here and Pamelia’s here.

Nancy Jane Kinsel was born on January 10, 1844 in Ohio. Her death record lists her father as George Kinsel. There’s a Nancy Kinsel born in 1844 in Ohio whose parents are John Kinsel and Sophena Daymude. I think it’s likely that her parents are John and Sophena, but I’m not sure. Maybe George/John Kinsel is one person. I’m still working on this.

On the 1850 US Census, 11-year-old Frank lived with parents Jeremiah, age 58, and Pamelia, age 50, in Hopewell, Ohio. Sisters Sarah, age 19, and Susan, age 5, also lived in the home. Jeremiah was a butcher.

On the 1860 US Census, 19-year-old Frank lived with the Thompson family in Normal, Illinois. They were farmers, and Frank was a farmer.

Francis and Nancy married on October 23, 1862 in McClean, Illinois.

On the 1870 US Census, Frank was 30 and Nancy was 26. They were farming in Normal, Illinois. Albert was 3 and Anna was 10 months.

On the 1880 US Census, Frank was 40 and Nancy was 36. Albert was 12, Anna was 10, and Alice was 5. They were farming in White Oak, Illinois.

Francis died on October 24, 1899 in Union County, Iowa. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1900 US Census, Nancy was 56 and widowed. She was farming in Grant, Iowa. Four of her children were at home: Albert, age 32; Alice, age 25; Kate, age 17; Grace, age 11.

On the 1910 US Census, Nancy was 66 and widowed. She lived with son Albert, age 42, and daughter Grace, age 21.

Nancy died on March 13, 1913 in Union, Iowa. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

The children of Francis Marion Hampton and Nancy Jane Kinsel:

Albert Hampton – Bert was born in January of 1856 in Illinois. He farmed in Iowa and never married. He died in 1952. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Anna May Hampton – Anna was born in 1869. She married Aaron Culbertson on March 1, 1898 in Creston, Iowa. They had 4 children and farmed in Iowa. She died on February 14, 1964 in Afton, Iowa. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Alice Hampton – Alice was born in 1874. She married Fred D. Werner on March 3, 1903 in Creston, Iowa. They had 7 children, and farmed in Iowa. She died in 1940. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Katherine Pamelia Hampton – Kate is Todd’s great grandmother. Read more about her here.

Grace E. Hampton – Grace was born in 1889. She married Oscar Reece on November 19, 1907 in Afton, Iowa. (Her sister Kate married Oscar’s brother Thomas Elmer Reece – they are Todd’s great grandparents.) Grace and Oscar had 3 children, and divorced. I don’t know when she died.

Thomas Elmer Reece was born on March 8, 1883 in Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois. His parents were William Henderson Reece and Mary Lavina Montgomery. He was the oldest of their 5 children. You can read about them here.

Katherine P. Hampton was born on July 29, 1882 in McLean County, Illiois. Her parents were Francis Marion Hampton and Nancy Jane Kinsel. She was the 4th of their 5 children. You can read about them here.

In 1899, Kate’s father Francis died.

On the 1900 US Census, both Thomas and Kate’s families were farming in Grant, Union County, Iowa. Thomas was 17 and attending school. He lived with parents William, age 49, and Mary, 45. Three younger siblings were at home: Oscar, age 14; Nancy, age 10; and Gilbert, age 7. Meanwhile, Kate was also 17, and wasn’t attending school. She lived with her widowed mother Nancy, age 56, and 3 siblings: Albert, age 32; Alice, age 25; and Grace, age 11.

Thomas and Kate were married on March 10, 1904 in Creston, Iowa. In 1905, their daughter Edna Irene was born.

On the 1910 US Census, Thomas and Kate were both 25. Their daughter Edna was 5. Kate had given birth to 3 children, only 1 living. They were farming in Grant, Iowa. Later that year, daughter Lela Mae was born.

In 1913, Kate’s mother Nancy died.

On September 12, 1918, Thomas filled out a World War II Draft Registration card. On it he is described him as tall and slender, with blue eyes and brown hair. Also in 1918, their son Elmer Howard was born. In 1914, their son Howard William was born. In 1916, their daughter Leona Marie was born. In 1918, their son Marion Leo was born.

On the 1920 US Census, Thomas was 36 and Kate was 37. They were farming in Jefferson, Iowa. They had 6 children: Edna, age 14; Lela, age 9; Elmer, age 7; Howard, age 5; Leona, age 3; and Marion, age 1.

Marion died in 1921 at age 2, and was accidentally shot in the head.

At some point they had unnamed twin boys who died as infants. We only know of them from a stone, in Oakland Cemetery where Thomas and Kate are buried, that reads “Infant sons of T.E. & K.P. Reece.”

In 1929, Thomas’ mother Mary Lavina died.

On the 1930 US Census, they were continuing to farm in Jefferson, Iowa. Thomas and Kate were 47. Still at home were Elmer, age 17; Howard, age 15; and Leona, age 13.

In 1931, Thomas’ father William Henderson and his brother Oscar Roy died.

I can’t find the family on the 1940 US Census. In 1940, Kate’s sister Alice died.

Thomas died on January 1, 1951 in Diagonal, Ringgold County, Iowa. He was 67 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

In 1951, daughter Edna Irene died. In 1952, Kate’s brother Albert died.

Kate died on April 15, 1962 in Diagonal, Ringgold County, Iowa. She was 79 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
