Conrad Clovis (1789-1870) & Mary Coss (1788-1872)

Conrad Clovis & Mary Coss are my 4x great grandparents, the parents of my 3x great grandfather John Clovis.

Conrad Clovis was born about 1789 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland.  I believe his father was Johanne Clobes who arrived in 1777 as a member of the Hessian Troops hired by the British to fight in the American War for Independence. He recieved land in Maryland for deserting during the war. He later appears as John Clovus on the 1790 and 1800 US Census in Washington County, Maryland.

Mary Coss was born October 5, 1788 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. She was a daughter of John Coss and Barbara Ridenour.

Conrad and Mary were married on December 24, 1810 in Washington County, Maryland.

On the 1820 US Census, Conrad was head of a household of 7 in Washington County, Maryland: 3 males under age 10; 1 male aged 26-44; 2 females under age 10; 1 female aged 26-44.

On the 1830 US Census, Conrad was head of a household of 9 in Springhill, Fayette County, Pennsylvania: 1 male aged 10-14; 1 male aged 15-19; 1 male aged 40-49; 2 females under age 5; 1 female aged 5-9; 1 female aged 15-19; 1 female aged 20-29; 1 female aged 40-49.

On the 1840 US Census, Conrad was head of a household of 6 in Whitely, Greene County, Pennsylvania: 1 male aged 5-9; 1 male aged 20-29; 1 male aged 50-59; 1 female aged 10-14; 1 female aged 15-19; 1 female aged 40-49.

On the 1850 US Census, Conrad was 65 and Mary was 60. They farmed in Perry, Greene County, Pennsylvania. They had 2 children at home: Barbara, age 20; Levi, age 18.

On the 1860 US Census, Conrad was 74 and Mary was 70. They farmed in Pleasants County, Virginia. Also in the home were Lavinia Clovis, age 12 and Samuel Coss, age 22.

Conrad died March 21, 1870 in Ritchie County, West Virginia. He died of “dropsy” which was likely edema caused by kidney or heart disease. He was 81 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1870 US Census, widowed Mary was 80. She lived in Clay, Ritchie County, West Virginia with son Levi and his family. She is marked as being unable to read.

Mary died March 26, 1872 in Ritchie County, West Virginia. She was 83 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

The children of Conrad Clovis & Mary Coss:

Sarah Clovis – Sarah was born in 1813 in Maryland. She married John Ganoe on June 22, 1830 in Pennsylvania. They farmed and had 9 children. Sarah died November 14, 1890 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. She was 77 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Levina Clovis – Levina was born May 15, 1815 in Washington County, Maryland. She married Charles Coss. They farmed and had 10 children. Levina died on November 17, 1897 in Perry, Greene County, Pennsylvania. She was 82 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

John Clovis – My 3x great grandfather John was born March 17, 1817 in Washington County, Maryland.  He married Sarah Husted in about 1837, and they had 9 children. John died June 1, 1892 in Mulberry, Crawford County, Kansas. Solomon Clovis – Solomon was born November 19, 1818. He fought for the Union in the Civil War with Company D, Pennsylvania 191st Infantry Regiment. He married Elizabeth Wrick and they had at least 6 children. Solomon was a farmer, tanner, and postmaster. He died November 30, 1876. He was 58 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Nancy Clovis – was born February 25, 1819. The only record I have for her is her christening record from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland.

James M. Clovis – James was born in 1820 in Maryland. He married Rebecca Robinson on December 2, 1862 in Warren county, Illinois. They did not have children. He fought for the Union in the Civil War with Company D, Illinois 70th Infantry Regiment. James was a farmer and shoemaker. It is not known when he died. The last record I have of him is the 1880 US Census when he was 60 and lived in Empire, Cherokee County, Kansas with his wife. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Mariah Clovis – Mariah was born in November of 1823 in Maryland. She married Alexander Cumpston. They farmed and had 6 children. She died September 14, 1907 in Gilmore, Greene County, Pennsylvania. She was 83 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Barbara Ellen Clovis – Barbara was born in 1828 in Pennsylvania. She married Cornelius Lemunyon in about 1852.  They farmed and had 8 children. The last record I have of her is the 1880 US Census in Dunkard, Greene County, Pennsylvania.

Levi B. Clovis – Levi was born in July of 1833 in Pennsylvania. He fought for the Union in the Civil War with Company F, West Virginia 14th Infantry Regiment. He married Matilda Jane Weekley in 1856 in Tyler County, West Virginia. They had 8 children. Levi was a farmer and a miller. He died March 16, 1910 in Wood County, West Virginia. He was 76 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

John Clovis (1817-1892) & Sarah Husted (1817-1875)

John Clovis and Sarah Husted are my 3x great grandparents, the parents of my 2x great grandmother Sarah Ann Clovis.

John Clovis was born March 17, 1817 in Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland. He was a son of Conrad Clovis and Mary Polly Coss.

Sarah Husted was born August 3, 1817 in Fayette City, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of David Husted and Jane Maxwell.

John and Sarah married in about 1837 based on the birth of their oldest child. Both would have been about 20 years old.

On the 1850 US Census, the family lived in Dunkard, Greene County, Pennsylvania. John was 37 and his occupation was “stiller.” Sarah was 33. They had 5 children: James, age 12; William, age 11; Leroy, age 7; Mary, age 5; Jesse, age 3.

On the 1860 US Census, the family was farming Coldbrook, Warren County, Illinois. John was 47 and Sarah was 43. It is indicated that Sarah can’t read or write. They had 7 children: James, age 22; Leroy, age 18; Mary, age 15; Sarah, age 10; John, age 7; Spencer, age 5; Ramina, age 2. Only Sarah had attended school in the past year.

On the 1870 US Census, the family was farming Lincoln. Crawford County, Kansas. John was 56 and farming. Sarah was 51. They had 4 children at home: Leroy, age 27;  John, age 17; Spencer, age 15; Ramina, age 12.

The 1870 US Agriculture Schedule lists John’s assets as: 35 improved acres; 125 unimproved acres; farm value of $160; farming implements value of $30; 2 milk cows; 2 working oxen; 2 pigs; all live stock value $90; 500 bushels of Indian corn.

Sarah died March 22, 1875 in Mulberry, Crawford County, Kansas. She was 57 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1880 US Census, widowed John was 62 and lived in Lincoln, Crawford County, Kansas with daughter Ramina, age 23, her husband John McKay, and their two children. Also in the house was John’s youngest son Spencer, age 23.

On the 1885 Kansas State Census, John was 73 and still lived in Crawford County, Kansas with daughter Ramina McKay and her family. He was also counted the same year living with son Spencer and his wife in the same county.

John died June 1, 1892 in Mulberry, Crawford County, Kansas. He wsa 75 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

John’s will left $50 to son William, $50 to daughter Mary, $100 to son James, and the rest of his estate divided between his 5 other children Leroy, Sarah, John, Spencer, and Ramina.

The children of John Clovis & Sarah Hustead:

James Mansfield Clovis – James was born August 13, 1838 in Pennsylvania. He married Emma Seals in about 1868. They had 7 children.  He died December 31, 1923 in Dewey County, Oklahoma. He was 85 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

William Arthur Clovis – William was born about 1840 in Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Sears on November 24, 1863 in Lee County, Iowa. They had 6 children. William died on January 2, 1922 in Mooreland, Woodward County, Oklahoma. He was 81 years old.

Leroy Joseph Clovis – Leroy was born March 10, 1842 in Pennsylvania. He married Nancy Ann Root. They had 11 children. He died May 17, 1925. He was 83 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.McKay

Mary Clovis – Mary was born about 1845 in Pennsylvania. She married a Mr. Holley, as she was listed in her father’s will as Mary Holley in 1892. That and the 1850 US Census are the only records I have of her.

Jesse B. Clovis – Jesse was born about 1847 in Pennsylvania. The only record of him is the 1850 US Census.

Sarah Ann Clovis – My 2x great grandmother Sarah was born October 24, 1850 in Pennsylvania. She married Joseph (Guisseppe) Barboro in January of 1870. They had 10 children.  She died March 25, 1931 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. She was 80 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here. Read more about her here.

John Huston Clovis – John was born April 1, 1853 in Pennsylvania. He married Angelina Gable. They had 8 children. He died June 22, 1933 in Barton County, Missouri. He was 80 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Spencer M. Clovis – Spencer was born in 1855. He married Eldora Marquis. They had 6 children. He died in 1923. He was about 80 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Ramina R. Clovis – Ramina was born September 24, 1858 in Illinois. She married John Jarrett McKay. They had 5 children. Ramina died June 14, 1944 in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. She was 85 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
