Ansel Parrish (1780-1860) & Winifred Cashatt (1785-1875)

Ansel Parrish and Winifred Cashett are Todd’s 4x Great Grandparents.

Ansel Parrish was born about 1780 in North Carolina. He is thought to be the son of Edward Parrish and  Susanna Wright. Edward fought in the the American Revolution. You can see his Find A Grave memorial here.

Winifred Cashatt was born in about 1785 in North Carolina. She is thought to be the daughter of Jacob Cashatt and wife Mary of Randolph County, North Carolina.

Ansel Parrish and Winifred Cashett took out a marriage bond on June 27, 1805 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Bondsmen were Joshua and P. Wright probably uncles or cousins of Ansel through his mother Susannah Wright. According to Ancestry.com: “When planning to marry, the prospective groom took out a bond from the clerk of the court in the county where the bride had her usual residence as surety that there was no legal obstacle to the proposed marriage.”

On the 1830 US Census, Ansel was head of a household of 10 people in Davidson County, North Carolina: 1 male under age 5 (Ansel was 4); 2 males aged 10-14 (Benjamin was 9, Simeon was 14; 1 male aged 15-19 (William Sumner was 17); 1 male aged 20-29 (Willie was 20); 1 male aged 50-59 (Ansel was 50); 1 female under age 5 (Elizabeth was 4); 2 females aged 5-9 (Sarah was 9, Judah was 7); 1 female aged 40-49 (Winifred was 45).

On the 1840 US Census, Ansel was head of a household in Davidson County, North Carolina. It was a household of 8: 1 male aged 10-14 (Ansel was 14); 2 males aged 20-29 Benjamin was 19 and Simeon was 24); 1 male aged 60-69 (Ansel was 60); 1 female aged 10-14 (Elizabeth was 14); 2 females aged 15-19 (Judah was 17 and Sarah was 19); 1 female aged 50-59 (Winifred was 55). The household includes 1 blind person (Winifred.)

On the 1850 US Census, Ansel was 70 and Winifred was 65. They lived in Davidson County, North Carolina. Winifred was blind. Also living in the house were son Ansel, age 24; Mary Van Carmon, age 24 and of unknown relation; and Emsley Harris, age 11, also of unknown relation.

Ansel died in January 1860 in Davidson County, North Carolina, and probate records are available at Ancestry.com. Those records indicate that he owned 400 acres on Lick Creek. I found notes about this family and it includes a transcript of court proceedings regarding Ansel’s land after his death, and his children are listed.

On the 1860 US Census, Winifred, age 75, was living with son Ansel, age 34, and his family in Davidson County, North Carolina. Emsley Harris, age 21 and going to school, lives with the family.

I can’t find Winifred on the 1870 US Census. She died in 1875 and probate records are available at Ancestry.com.
