William Hinds & Matilda Baker are my 4x great grandparents, the parents of my 3x great grandmother Nancy Jane Hinds.
William Hinds was born August 28, 1803 in Jackson County, Tennessee. He was the son of Levi Hinds and Nancy (last name unknown.)
Matilda Baker was born in 1808 in Tennessee. She was the daughter of William Baker and Nancy Duncan.
William & Matilda married about 1824 in Overton County, Tennessee.
On the 1840 US Census, William was head of a household in Prairie, Madison, Arkansas. There were 11 in the household: 2 males under age 5 (James, John); 1 male aged 5-9 (William); 1 male aged 30-39 (William was 37); 1 male aged 40-49; 1 female under age 5 (Martha); 1 female aged 5-9 (Mary Jane); 2 females aged 10-14 (Nancy, unknown); 1 female aged 15-19 (Levina); 1 female aged 30-39 (Matilda was 33).
On the 1850 US Census, the family was still in Prairie, Madison, Arkansas. William was 47, Matilda was 41, William was 16, James was 13, John was 12, Martha was 10, Abigail was 9, Lucinda was 7, Elijah was 5 and Caroline was 2.
On the 1860 US Census, the family was still in Prairie, Madison, Arkansas. William was 55, Matilda was 53, James was 24, Abigail was 18, Louisa was 13, Matilda was 12, Samuel was 8 and Narcissus was 5.
On the 1870 US Census, the family continued to live in Prairie, Madison, Arkansas. William was 65, Matilda was 61, Abigail was 30, Samuel was 17 and Narcissus was 14. Also in the home was widowed daughter Lucinda, age age 35, and her daughters. Son James and his family lived next door.
William died of cholera on September 11, 1879 in Hindsville, Madison County, Arkansas. He was 76 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.
On the 1880 US Census, Matilda was 73, a widow, and lived alone in Prairie, Madison, Arkansas.
Matilda died July 25, 1889. She was about 81 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
The children of William M. Hinds & Matilda Baker:
Lavina Hinds – Lavina was born about 1825 in Tennessee. She married Amos Smith in about 1841, and they had 10 children. The last record I have of the family is the 1880 US Census when they lived in California, Madison County, Arkansas.
Nancy Jane Hinds – My 3x great grandmother Nancy was born December 20, 1826 in Tennessee. She married James Thomas Harp in about 1842 in Arkansas, when James was about 18 and Nancy was 15. They had 11 children. Nancy died on October 6, 1886. She was 59. Her Find A Grave memorial is here. Read more about her here.
Mary Jane Hinds – Mary was born about 1830 in Tennessee. She married William Carl Beshears in about 1846 and they had 7 children. The last record I have of the family is the 1880 US Census, when Mary was 50 and widowed and living in Liberty, Barry County, Missouri.
William Hinds – William was born about 1833 in Arkansas. The last sure record I have of him is the 1850 US Census with his parents. A William Hinds of Lawrence County, Arkansas married Martha Campton on May 3, 1851 in Lawrence County, Arkansas. I can’t find them on a census.
James M. Hinds – James was born January 28, 1836 in Madison County, Arkansas. He married Martha Adaline Jenkins Guthrie. Martha had several children and they had 3 daughters together. James died February 9, 1888 in Madison County, Arkansas. He was 52 years old His Find A Grave memorial is here.
John Baker Hinds – John was born May 30, 1837 in Madison County, Arkansas. He married Nancy Adaline Burnett in 1858. They had 12 children and farmed in Elk Horn, McDonald County, Missouri. John fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy. Nancy died sometime after 1900. He married Sally C. (last name unknown) in 1907 and it was the 2nd marriage for both. They are together on the 1910 US Census in Turkey Creek, Washita County, Oklahoma. He married Susan Cordelia Taylor Garrett on December 10, 1905. She had been married and had several children. John died August 3, 1927 in Burns Flat, Washita County, Oklahoma. He was 90 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.
Martha Hinds – Martha was born 1840 in Madison County, Arkansas. She married Jesse Williams in about 1856 and they had 9 children. She died in 1888 when she was about 48 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
Abigail Hinds – Abigail was born about 1841 in Arkansas. She is found with her parents on the US Census in 1850, 1860 and 1870. She had a daughter, her only child, named Jane Hinds, born in 1863, but she doesn’t appear on a Census with her until 1880. On the 1880 & 1900 US Census, Abigail is found with husband Henderson Yarberry, first in Madison County, Arkansas and then in Washington County, Arkansas. She is thought to have died in 1901 when she was about 60 years old.
Lucinda Hinds – Lucinda was born in June of 1843 in Arkansas. She married Elisha McDonald in about 1857, and they had 2 daughters. Elisha fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy, contracted the measles while fighting, and died in 1862. Lucinda didn’t remarry and collected a Civil War pension. The last record I have for her is the 1900 US Census when she was 56 and a boarder in Madison County, Arkansas.
Elijah Hinds – Elijah was born about 1845 in Arkansas. The only record I have of him is the 1850 US Census.
Louisa America Hinds – Louisa was born January 28, 1847 in Arkansas. She married Amos Keller Wilks in 1866 and they had 10 children. She died June 6, 1909 when she was 62 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
Matilda Caroline Hinds – Matilda was born October 4, 1849 in Arkansas. She married Allen W. Fritts in 1866 and they had 15 children. She died December 28, 1945 when she was 96 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
Samuel M. Hinds – Samuel was born in 1853 in Arkansas. He married Amanda E. Rucker in 1876 and they had 6 children. He died in 1927 in Oklahoma when he was about 74 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.
Narcissus Clemetine Hinds – Narcissus was born June 28, 1855 in Arkansas. She married George W. Todd and they had 3 children. She died on April 16, 1936 in Dallas County, Texas. She was 80 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
