Hiram J. Lamb (1826-1902) and Sarah Laura Burkhead (1835-1926)

Hiram J. Lamb and Sarah Laura Burkhead are Todd’s 3X Great Grandparents.

Hiram J. Lamb was born May 16, 1826 in Ohio. He was the son of Jacob Lamb and Elizabeth Adams. Read about them here.

Sarah Laura Burkhead was born October 12, 1835 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Joshua Samuel Burkhead and Rachel Gray. Read about them here.

On the 1850 US Census, Hiram was found living in Clay, Tuscarawas County, Ohio with his sister Hannah Lamb James, her husband Hiram James, their children Elizabeth and Charles, and Hiram and Hannah’s half-siblings Jacob and Margaret. Also in Tuscarawas County is Hiram’s future wife, 14 year old Sarah Burkhead. She is found with her parents Joshua and Rachel Burkhead and her siblings.

Hiram and Sarah were married around 1853, probably is Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

On the 1860 US Census, Hiram was 36 and Sarah was 24. They lived in Rush, Tuscarawas County, Ohio with their 3 children: Rachel, age 5; Mary, age 3; Emmett, age 2 months.

On the 1870 US Census, the family lived in Jefferson, Warren County, Iowa. Hiram was 45 and Sarah was 37. They had 5 children: Rachel, age 16; Mary, age 12; Emmett, age 10; Margaret, age 7; Thomas, age 1.

On the 1880 US Census, the family remained in Jefferson, Warren County, Iowa. Hiram was 55 and Sarah was 47. Two children were at home: Emmett, age 20, school teacher; and Thomas, age 11.

On the 1900 US Census, it gets weird. Hiram, age 74 and Sarah, age 64, are still in Warren County, Iowa. Sarah is listed as head of household and Hiram is listed as her brother. It says both are widowed, and that Sarah had no children. The birth month, year, and location are correct for both. At least two if not three of their 5 children were dead. Daughter Rachel lived in Minnesota and son Emmett lived in Cherokee County, Iowa.

Sarah married David Baker on January 4, 1904 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was 69 years old. Sarah was listed on the 1905 Iowa Census living in DesMoines using the last name Lamb. In 1910 Davis was listed as widowed, and he died in 1911.

Son Emmett died in 1918. Widowed daughter Rachel returned to Iowa from South Dakota, and married in Warren County, Iowa in 1923.

The children of Hiram Lamb and Sarah Laura Burkhead:

Rachel A. Lamb – Rachel was born August 4, 1854 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She married Josiah Tuttle Burlingame on December 14, 1872. They had 6 children. Josiah died in 1921. Rachel married Robert Ritchey on February 14, 1923 in Liberty Center, Iowa. She died July 27, 1937. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Emmett Burkhead Lamb – Emmett was born March 11, 1860 in Warren County, Iowa. He married Linnie P. Anderson on November 7, 1882 in Warren County, Iowa. They had a daughter, Ina, and a son, Carroll. After Linnie died in 1894, Emmett married Margaret Jennie McGinnis on March 21, 1898. They had no children. Emmett was a school teacher and then a commercial seller of produce. He died May 27, 1918. Margaret F. Lamb – Margaret was born about 1863 in Warren County, Iowa. She died March 6, 1878. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Joshua C. Lamb – Joshua was born in October of 1866 in Warren County, Iowa. He died on November 8, 1867. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Thomas Ausborne Lamb – Thomas was born March 2, 1869 in Warren County, Iowa. He married Lottie B. Patterson on February 24, 1891 in Warren County, Iowa. They had a daughter, Doris. He died September 2, 1894. His Find A Grave memorial is here.
