Zachariah Baker (1770-1841) & Susanna Washburn (1771-1849)

Zachariah Baker & Susanna Washburn are Todd’s 4X Great Grandparents. We know we are tracking the right line because Todd’s dad Lanny’s DNA puts him in the Zachariah Baker DNA Circle at Ancestry.com.

Zachariah Baker was born November 12, 1770 in Maryland. His parents are Zebediah Baker & Cassandra Evans. Their Find A Grave memorials are here and here.

Susanna Washburn was born December 17, 1771 in Pennsylvania. Her parents are Nathaniel Washburn & Christine Shafer. It is said that Nathaniel served in the Revolutionary War and also in the War of 1812, when he was over 70 years old. See their Find A Grave memorials here and here.

Zachariah served as a Private in Ford’s Regiment of Militia, Territory South of the Ohio, commanded by William Miles, for the month of May, 1794.

Zachariah and Susanna married in about 1794 according to the birth of their first child. They bought 50 acres of land in Brooke County, Virginia and they sold that land in 1806 to move to Jefferson County, Ohio. Zachariah was named on the first grand jury in Harrison County, Ohio (which was created from Jefferson County) in 1811.

Zachariah served in the War of 1812 as a Lieutenant in Bevier’s Battalion, New York Militia. Zachariah and Susanna had 12 children at the time of his service, and would eventually have 2 more.

On the 1820 US Census, Zachariah was head of a household in Archer, Harrison County, Ohio. There were 13 in the household: 4 males under age 10; 2 males aged 10-14; 2 males aged 45 and over; 2 females under age 10; 1 female aged 10-14; 2 females aged 45 and over.

On the 1830 US Census, Zachariah was still head of a household in Archer, Harrison County, Ohio. There were 8 in the household: 1 male aged 10-14; 2 males aged 15-19; 2 males aged 20-29; 1 male aged 50-59; 1 female aged 15-19; 1 female aged 50-59.

The 14 children of Zachariah Baker & Susanna Washburn, as listed in his will:

Cassandra Baker – Cassandra was born about 1795 in Virginia. She married James Samuel McIlroy on November 21, 1816, and they had 11 children. She died January 27, 1852 in Union County, Ohio. Her Find A Grave memorial here.

Nathaniel Baker – Nathaniel was born in 1796 in West Virginia. He married Belinda Busby on November 11, 1819 in Harrison County, Ohio. They had 6 children. He died in August of 1883 in Richland, Ohio. His probate records are available at Ancestry.com.

Zachariah Baker – Zachariah was Todd’s 3x great grandfather. Read about him here.

Susanna Baker – Susanna was born between 1797 and 1801 in Virginia. She married George Smith on February 12, 1818 in Harrison County, Ohio. Their daughter Peggy Smith was mentioned in Susanna’s father’s will in 1841 so Susanna died prior to that.

Evan/Iven Baker – Iven was born August 2, 1800 according to his tombstone. (I’m skeptical because his brother Zebedee was born in July 1800 according to his tombstone. They had at least 7 children. He died December 27, 1886 in Carroll County, Ohio. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Zebedee Baker – Zebedee was born in July of 1800 according to his tombstone. He married Martha Shriver. They had at least 7 children. He died April 2, 1880 in Marion County, Ohio. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

  1. Suzanne Hopper Gray,

I am researching a brother of Susanna Washburn (1771-1849). He was James Washburn (1779-1848) and resided in Highland County, Ohio. The reason for my research is so I may apply for the DAR under Nathaniel Washburn, NJ Militia. I am struggling to find documentation to link James as son of Nathaniel. James is listed as a son of Nathaniel and Christina Washburn’s in several genealogies and even in a published book by Catherine Lutes Gowdy titled Nathaniel Washburn An American Pioneer. James shares with Susanna a common fact which is there is no baptismal/birth records to show parental lineage. I noticed that through Susanna, there are DAR members tied to Nathaniel Washburn. I was curious if perhaps after the publication of Gowdy’s book, families of Susanna were able to find a linkage to Nathaniel Washburn which enable Susanna’s descendants to join DAR. If you can be of any help, please contact me at sherrismithson@yahoo.com

    Sincerely,

    • Thank you for contacting me. Unfortunately the only thing I have that connects Susanna Washburn to parents is her Find A Grave memorial, and other genealogies online. I don’t have a source beyond that. Best of luck in your search!
