George F. Hickman (1820-?) & Lamira Clift (1825-1878)

George F. Hickman and Lamira Clift are Todd’s 3X Great Grandparents.

George F. Hickman was born about 1820 in Mason County, Kentucky, and I’m trying to figure out who his parents are.

Lamira Clift was born January 16, 1825 in Mason County, Kentucky. She is the daughter of Abner Clift and Mary Robinson. Read about them here.

On the 1850 US Census, George was 27 and lived in Mason County, Kentucky with the family of Charles Humphreys. George was the farm overseer for the family. Lamira was 23 and lived with her widowed mother and siblings in Mason County.

George and Lamira were married on August 12, 1851 in Mason County, Kentucky.

On the 1860 US Census, George was 40 and Lamira was 35. Lamira’s mother Mary Clift, age 70, lived with the family. George and Lamira had 4 children: Mary, age 7; Charles, age 6; Abner, age 4; John, age 2. Mary Clift is listed on a Slave Schedule as having the following slaves: 1 female age 38; 1 male age 16; 1 female age 8; 1 male age 4; 1 male age 2.

The Hickmans are said to have lost everything in the Civil War. Their slaves (actually the slaves owned by George’s mother-in-law Mary Robinson Clift) were set free, and the family moved to Holt County, Missouri after 1867 when their youngest son Joseph was born. Todd’s dad Lanny remembers his mother Edna telling about her grandfather, George & Lamira’s son Abner, saying that before they set out for Missouri one of their slaves took his little pair of boots and gave them to her son. According to the Slave Schedule for 1860, there was a 4 year old male slave in the household, and Abner was 4 years old too.

On the 1870 US Census, George was 50 and Lamira was 45. They lived in Union, Holt County, Missouri. They had 5 children: Mary, age 17; Abner, age 14; John, age 12; Anna, age 10; Joseph, age 3. George was working as a laborer.

Lamira died on November 26, 1878 in Craig, Holt County, Missouri.

On the 1880 US Census, George was 60 and widowed. He had 3 children at home: Abner, age 23; John, age 21; Joseph, age 12. George was farming.

George died sometime after the 1880 US Census.
