James Henry Bly (1825-1864) & Jane Brittain (1839-1911)

UPDATED JULY 2017

James Henry Bly and Jane Brittain are my 3x great grandparents, parents of my 2X great grandmother Sarah Margaret Bly.

It’s hard to find accurate information this far back because records are sparse. However, Delores Raines Sutton has done a tremendous job researching the Brittain and Bly families (and many others), and her information is available online. I’ve relied heavily on that information here today.

James Henry Bly was born in 1825 in Kentucky. His parents are John Bly and Charity Adams. Read about them here.

Jane Brittain was born January 2, 1839 in Henderson, Knox County, Illinois. Her parents are George Brittain and Memory Larimore. Read about them here.

On the 1850 US Census, James was 25 and lived in Clark, Montgomery County, Indiana with his widowed mother Charity, age 65, at the home of his brother Abraham and his wife Mary.

Also on the 1850 US Census, Jane was 11 and lived with father George, age 37, and mother Memory, age 37, in Keokuk, Iowa. Also in the home were 3 siblings and her grandmother.

James Henry Bly and Jane Brittain were married on May 31, 1854 in Caldwell County, Missouri. James was 28 or 29, and Jane was 15. Records note that they were passing through on their way to Mercer County. I’d love to know how an Indiana boy meets an Iowa girl and decides to get married and settle in Missouri.

There’s a land grant issued to James Bly on October 30, 1857 in Mercer County, Missouri for 43.8 acres; and another on April 2, 1860 for 80.28 acres.

On the 1860 US Census, James, age 35, was head of a household in Medicine, Mercer County, Missouri. His wife Jane was 21. They had three children: George, age 4; John, age 2; and Mary, age 6 months. Also in the house was James’ mother Charity, age 77. Jane’s parents were nearby.

In 1861, the family moved to Keokuk County, Iowa with Jane’s parents.

James enlisted to fight for the Union in the Civil War on August 13, 1862 in Butler, Iowa. A week later my 2x Great Grandmother, Sarah Margaret Bly, was born. James served in Company F, 33rd Infantry Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers. He became sick while in Little Rock, Arkansas, and was sent home on sick leave December 1863. He died January 11, 1864 at home in Steady Run, Iowa. He was 38 or 39. Cause of death was chronic diarrhea. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

After James’ death, Jane moved with her children and her parents back to Mercer County, Missouri.

Jane married Calvin Parton in May 1865. He was a widower with 2 children, and he had served in the Civil War. In 1869, Jane’s family and her parents moved to Wilson County, Kansas.

On the 1870 US Census, Jane and Calvin were in Clifton, Wilson County, Kansas. All of the children are listed with the last name of Parton – Jane’s 4 from her previous marriage, Calvin’s 2 from his previous marriage, and the 2 they’d had together. They would have 2 more sons together.

In 1874, Jane’s family and her parents moved to Mincy, Taney County, Missouri. They helped found Mincy Valley Church. Calvin Parton died December 24, 1878 in Mincy. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1880 US Census, Jane was 40, widowed, and living in Oliver, Taney County, Missouri. The household includes 2 of her children with James Henry Bly, her 4 children with Calvin Parton, and grandson Jesse Parton, age 1. I don’t know who Jesse’s parents are.

On the 1900 US Census, Jane was 56 and lived in Scott, Taney County, Missouri. Her son Charles was 22 and married to Maggie, age 19. They had 1 year old Rossie. Jane’s son James lived next door with his wife and 3 children.

On the 1910 US Census, Jane isn’t found.

Jane died October 30, 1911 in Omaha, Arkansas. She was 72.
