Joshua Hopper III (1795-1853) & Sarah Sally Sheppard (1800-1840)

UPDATED July 2017

Joshua Hopper III and Sarah Sally Sheppard are my 4th great grandparents. They are the parents of my 3rd great grandfather Joshua Hopper IV.

Joshua Hopper III was born on October 25, 1795 in Adair County, Kentucky. His parents are Joshua Hopper II and Margaret Vairs/Varis/Vardi.

Sarah Sally Sheppard was born on March 6, 1800 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Her parents are Lewis Washington Sheppard and Ally Johnson. Lewis served in the War of 1812. You can see Lewis’ Find A Grave memorial here.

Joshua Hopper III married Sarah Sally Sheppard on November 20, 1820 in Adair County, Kentucky. He was 25 and she was 20.

On the 1830 US Census, Joshua was head of a household in Russell, Kentucky. He would have been 35 but both he and his wife were enumerated in the 20-29 year old columns. They had 3 sons under the age of 5 (Stephen, Theophilus, Joseph); 1 son between 5 & 9 (Joshua IV); and 1 daughter under 5 (Rhoda). They also had 8 slaves: 2 males under 10; 1 male between 10 & 23; 1 male between 55 & 99; 1 female under 10; 1 female between 10 & 23; 2 females between 24 & 35.

On the 1840 US Census, the family has moved to Rawlings, Greene County, Illinois, and they no longer had slaves. They lived close to Joshua’s parents who are enumerated as a household of 2, a man and a woman both between the ages of 50 & 59, which matches their ages. However, both Joshua and Sarah are again enumerated in the 20-29 year old column. They are said to have 1 son under 5; 1 daughter under 5; and 1 daughter between the ages of 10 & 14. However, they had 12 children, all living, ranging in age from 19 to 2.

Sarah Sally Sheppard died on July 31, 1840 in Athensville, Greene County, Illinois. She was 40.  Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Joshua married Susannah Barnard on April 22, 1841 in Greene County, Illinois. He was 45 and she was 38 or 39.

On the 1850 US Census, Joshua was 55 and Susannah was 48. They farmed “North of Apple Creek” in Greene County, Illinois. They had two children together: William was 8 and Cavil was 6. Also in the home were Joshua’s children with Sarah: John, age 20; Sampson, age 13; Francis, age 12.
