John Henry Hopper (1884-1940) & Maybelle Parks (1887-1956)

UPDATED JULY 2017

John Henry Hopper & Maybelle Parks are my great grandparents, parents of the grandfather who died before I was born, William Henry Hopper.

John Henry Hopper was born January 2, 1884 in Mincy, Taney County, Missouri. He is a son of Jasper Joseph Hopper and Sarah Margaret Bly. Read about them here.

Maybelle Parks was born July 6, 1887 in Forsyth, Taney County, Missouri. She is a daughter of Abraham Parks and Mary Kilman. Read about them here.

On the 1900 US Census, John (age 16), was boarding with the Washburn family in Mill Bayou, Arkansas County, Arkanas. He was a farm laborer. John’s family lived 230 miles away. Maybelle (almost 13) lived with her parents and siblings in Bear Creek, Boone County, Arkansas.

John and Maybelle married on July 14, 1902 in Boone County, Arkansas. The groom was 18 and lived in Denver, Carroll County, Arkansas. The bride was said to be 16 (but had just turned 15) and lived in Shaver, Boone County, Arkansas.

On the 1910 US Census, they lived at 406 E. Hall Street in  Carterville, Jasper County, Missouri. They had 3 kids, and had been married 8 years. John was 26, Maybelle was 24, and they had 3 sons. Ralph was 5, Dennis was 3, and George was 10 months old. John was a mule driver in a lead & lime mill.

In September of 1918, John filled out a World War I draft registration card. He was 34, and it indicates that he was tall, slender, with gray eyes and red hair. He lived in Batavia, Boone County, Arkansas.

I can’t find the family on the 1920 US Census.

On the 1930 US Census, the family farmed in Long Creek, Carroll County, Arkansas. John was 46 and Maybelle was 42. They had 8 children, all born in Arkansas. Delmar was 18, Bert was 16, Beulah was 14, Roy was 12, Lillie was 8, Agnes was 6, Claude was 2, and Juanita was 10 months.

On the 1940 US Census, the family lived on Academy Road in Fresno County, California. John was 56 and Maybelle was 52. They had 3 children at home. Agnes was 16, Claude was 12, and Juanita was 10. John was a laborer at a farm. Most of the family moved to Fresno before or shortly after 1940 – married sons Ralph, Dennis, William, Delmar & Bert, and married daughters Beulah and Billie all ended up in California. George settled in Stone County, Missouri.

John died on November 10, 1940 in Fresno County, California. He was 56. His Find A Grave memorial is here. Maybelle died February 28, 1956 in Los Angeles. She was 68. Her Find A Grave memorial is here. Both are buried in Sanger Cemetery, Sanger, Fresno County, California.
